Ghost became very aware that confidence created a barrier for our learners to engage their children into “clubs” such as dance or sport. We were told it was intimidating, so we began by offering small groups of activities that became very successful. Local young people asked if they could join in.
The Ghost team are parents so we understand the importance of keeping our children engaged in positive activities and the health benefits mentally and physically but we also know that children need to use up energy! This allows bedtime routines and boundaries/disciplines to become enforced supporting our beneficiaries in their parenting journey… also giving our mums some me time! 😀
In 2018 we were awarded funding from London Sport to set up 6 activities for a period of 30 weeks. The activities included:
- Monday 6-8pm – Rugby delivered at Romford & Gidea park training academy in Romford by Gainline Rugby.
- Tuesday 6-9pm – Dance delivered by Carter productions
- Wednesday 6-8pm – Basketball delivered at Marshall’s park academy in Romford by Joe Ikinwin, captain of the London professional basketball team ‘The London Lions’.
- Thursday 5-7pm – Yoga delivered by yoga matters in our academy space in Chadwell heath.
- Thursday 5-6pm – Karate delivered by Roger Garrett Roding Karate delivered in Chadwell Heath Baptist Church.
- Friday 6:30-8:30 – Football delivered at Playfootball Romford delivered by Ricky Simmons from Dagenham & Redbridge FC.
Each activity made a huge impact in the young people that attended and we have been inundated with pleas from the young people to start it up again. This is definitely a plan moving forward!
